Some problems are best understood as parallel operations on the elements of a data structure. When the operations are for the most part uniformly applied to these elements, an effective solution is to treat the problem as a single stream of instructions applied to each element. This pattern can be extended to a wider range of problems by defining an index space and then aligning both the parallel operations and the data structures around each point in the index space.
